SOFA BRAND MX - Day at the Studio
But we aren’t here for shooting dirt bikes ripping on the Leadville track, we’re here to hear about our day at the studio. A totally different vibe from an outdoor shoot.
There’s lots of challenges outdoors, and then there were also challenges in the studio. For one thing, our DP Leland Schmidt had some trouble with top down lighting, you can ask him if it was his fault or the studio’s. But there where plenty of other challenges with shooting in studio that we had to make sure to dial in.
Lighting is a huge aspect in photo and video production, but especially in the studio. It’s most fun in the studio because, you’re able to achieve any look and customize the lighting setup with absolute control. That’s what we did, for certain frames in the video there was more of top down lighting and more bright and airy feel. Then for one of our promo videos, there was a more moody and dark spotlight effect. Another challenge was able to blend those different types of lighting to be consistent in the final video and the same goes for photos.
Another challenge was allowing time for photography between sets. Most of photo/video productions, the photographer or in this case, myself have to find time in between frames to capture our photos. So working efficiently and quickly is absolutely important. Our assistant was able to adjust lighting on the fly to make it more pleasing for photography, while also being able to adjust right back to how our video team liked it. This is all to save time in post processing, lighting can be more forgiving with video, minor lighting glares or flaws are much more noticeable in a photo.
There’s always fun on set, like I said in the first blog. Having fun and working efficiently is crucial to a successful day of shooting. For video, our talent had to get in a certain mood for specific frames that were all about the motion of the talent more than the camera movement. So that’s where the hype music come in, Leland was a great aux and amped up the talent which definitely helped the final result in the video. Those Small things matter.
You’ll see in every blog that I write, that I am a major foodie, just ask my friends and team. Keeping the client, talent, and everyone on set happy, is very important and food is the best way to solve that. Just like Snickers says “You aren’t you, when you’re hungry.” So myself and our assistant go out to pick up the food, Goodtimes is what’s on the menu. Let me say after 10 years of being without Goodtimes, I can tell you now that was probably a mistake, they got surprisingly good food.
Did I mention that I also got to experience my first glimpse into a manufacture commercial. Just outside and in the other studio, Ford was filming a commercial and although I didn’t get to see everything. I got to meet a couple people and see how many people walked in and out of production for that commercial. It had to be well over 50 people. They all had dedicated roles. It was cool seeing how far I’ve come but also that I was no where near where I wanted to be. I want to be on a Photo & Video Production Set like that. 5 years down the road, you’re going to see myself and our team on a similar project like this with a dedicated waterboy, and food re-filler. Yes that was actually one of the roles.
All in all, the day at the studio worked great and I look forward to working on projects like this in the future. Our assistant Tyrel McIntyre got some great photos of myself in action, as well as some behind the scenes shots of our video team. So check them out down below.
Our day at the Studio was super successful and we were proud of the results we produced. We shot 3 promo videos throughout the entire project as well as a full commercial. Providing high quality photos throughout with plenty of images from the track and in the studio. Check out our full project with Sofa Brand down below.
